As the picture above shows we are due for a clean up of Black Currant rows. These are our newest plants we planted a few months ago. The oats between the rows have done a wonderful job of weed suppression, but there time has come and the space will be planted with a permanent orchard grass to carry on the good work.
The rows of Black Currants will also receive a mulch cover, again to control those nasty weeds. The mulch represents a considerable investment, but pulling weeds and hoeing 500 foot rows is not fun. Our first choice will be to use non-spray methods of weed controls.
The work was done over a weekend and the results speak for themselves. Today the weeds lost the battle!
